A quick dive into Google Business Profiles

A Google Business Profile (formerly Google My Business) is a free Local SEO tool that lets you manage how your business appears on Google Search and Maps – including your location, opening hours, photos, reviews, and more.

No matter what you sell, or where you’re based, there is a truth that you, as a retailer, cannot escape: your customers are checking you out on Google before they even consider visiting you. For local bike shops, tack stores, or outdoor gear retailers, your Google Business Profile (GBP for short) is now the real first impression…

… and often the deciding factor.

97% of UK shoppers search online for businesses near them. They don’t head into town anymore, and find you that way – they’re all finding you on the internet through mobile search

Now, when someone types in “bike shop near me”, where do you think you appear? First? Third? On page 1? Well, without optimisation, there’s a good chance you won’t be anywhere.

That’s a daunting thought. You could have all the right stock, the best staff in the world, but without a GBP that has been optimised, you’re practically invisible in the Map Pack/Local Pack.

What is the Map Pack / Local Pack?

The Map Pack or Local Pack is the top 3 results (that get the majority of the clicks) whenever you’re looking for places online.

Plus, being in the Local Pack isn’t just nice to have. For online shops, it’s free, high-visibility real estate on Google.

So, naturally, it’s competitive.

But here’s a quick trick to instantly get you a spot in these exclusive Map Pack/Local Pack places… a GBP.

Retailers with GBPs are the only candidates who can secure these spots, no matter their website, store size, or popularity.

I’m in the “Top 3”… now what?

So, you made it to the top 3 – congratulations! Did you optimise your profile for your customers? No? Then, unfortunately, your work isn’t done.

Of all the results, you want to be the one that grabs attention first. The one with glowing reviews, fresh photos, and correct hours.

Dress to impress

A profile with no reviews, blurry photos, or outdated hours is a red flag. On the other hand:

  • 83% of shoppers trust Google reviews to make their decision
  • Business profiles with photos get 42% more direction requests and 35% more website clicks

Your GBP isn’t just about SEO. It’s about the things your customers are looking for: trust, and credibility. That’s how you convert your views into visits.

Drive real-world results

The great news is, someone doesn’t even need to visit your site. Your GBP will completely cut down the customer journey:

  • Phone Calls: 16% of businesses get 100+ calls/month from GBP
  • Driving Directions: 50% more direction requests when the profile is up-to-date
  • Website Clicks: Over half of user actions on GBP are click-throughs to your website

That’s not just traffic, it’s customers walking through your door.

Google Business Profile checklist:

NAP consistency

NAP stands for your Business’s Name, Address, and Phone number. They must be accurate and consistent everywhere – especially with your website.

Clear business description

Choose the most specific, relevant category (e.g., “Bicycle Shop” or “Equestrian Supplies”) and add secondary categories as needed. Use the description space to highlight your key services and include search-friendly terms:

“Family-run outdoor gear shop in the Lake District stocking hiking boots, waterproofs, and maps.”

Keep it friendly, concise, and on-brand.

High-quality photos

Photos are a must, and the higher the quality, the more likely the conversion.

Add images of your shop exterior, interior, team, and products. Want a quick stat? BrightLocal found businesses with 100+ photos get 20x more clicks, so update them regularly.

Seasonal ranges? New arrivals? Just snap, upload, and grab a slice of this consumer pie.

Reply to reviews

Encourage happy customers to leave a Google review. You can grab your custom QR code on your GBP, and then post this at your checkout – or even send a quick follow-up email.

But, most importantly, respond to every review. This shows you’re active, and builds trust with your shoppers.

Correct business hours

Make sure they’re always accurate, and update for holidays and seasonal changes.

After all, how else can your customers buy from you if you send them to a closed shop?

Showcase posts & offers

Use the “Updates” feature to highlight offers, events, or news. Think: “New Season Jackets In Stock!” or “Bike Maintenance Workshop This Saturday”. It adds life to your profile and keeps Google happy.

Use your Q&As

Finally – monitor questions, and add common FAQs yourself.

That way, customers get helpful info and you control the answers.
